You pay by the hour for Windows Server 2025 Datacenter running on a machine image. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance you launch. General-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage, accelerated-computing, and high-performance families are all available. Larger sizes within a family carry more CPU, memory, or GPU resources and bill at higher hourly rates. You choose the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you run. Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to, and what does the rate cover?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type named in that dimension, billed per hour. The rate covers the Windows Server 2025 Datacenter software license on the machine image. Underlying AWS compute, storage, and data transfer bill separately through your AWS account.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when an instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay AWS for attached storage such as EBS volumes while the instance is stopped, but that is separate from this software license fee.
How do I move to a different instance size, and does the rate change automatically?
You pick the instance type when you launch. Switching size means launching a different dimension's instance; the new hourly rate applies to that instance. Changes are manual, not automatic. Larger sizes carry more CPU, memory, or GPU and bill at higher hourly rates.

Connect to Your Windows Server Instance
Once your Amazon EC2 Windows Server instance has been successfully deployed, you can securely access it using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). During the initial startup, AWS automatically generates a unique password for the built in Administrator account, which must be decrypted using your private key.
Before You Connect
Please ensure the following prerequisites are completed:
Your EC2 instance is in the Running state.
Both EC2 status checks have completed successfully (2/2 checks passed).
You have access to the private key (.pem) that was used when launching the instance.
Step 1 - Retrieve the Administrator Password
Open the Amazon EC2 Console.
Select your Windows Server instance.
Choose Connect, then open the RDP Client tab.
Click Get Password.
Upload your .pem private key to decrypt the automatically generated Administrator password.
Copy the decrypted password for use during the RDP login process.
Step 2 - Start a Remote Desktop Session
Launch your preferred Remote Desktop (RDP) client.
Connect using your instance's Public IPv4 Address or Public DNS.
Sign in using the following credentials:
Username: Administrator
Password: The decrypted password obtained from the EC2 Console
If prompted, accept the Windows security certificate to complete the connection.
