You pay by the hour for a ready-to-run Windows Server 2025 Datacenter image. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so you pick the compute size that fits your workload. Options span burstable T2 and T3 families for lighter or variable loads, plus M3, M4, M5, and M5 variants for steady general-purpose use. Larger sizes (from nano up to 24xlarge and metal) add more CPU and memory, and cost more per hour. Software billing runs alongside the underlying AWS infrastructure charges. You only pay while instances run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running virtual machine of that EC2 instance type, billed per hour. The instance type sets the CPU and memory you get. Larger sizes like 24xlarge or metal provide more compute than nano or medium sizes. You are billed for each hour a machine runs.
The software fee meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You still may see separate AWS charges for attached storage while the machine is stopped. Charges resume once you start the instance again.
Two charges apply per running hour and add together. One is the Windows Server 2025 software fee tied to your chosen instance type. The other is the underlying AWS compute cost for that same instance. Both bill only while the instance runs and appear on your AWS invoice.
