You pay by the hour for a virtual machine running Windows Server 2025 Datacenter. Each dimension maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type, so you pick the compute size that fits your workload. The options span the general-purpose M-family (m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5dn, m5n, m5ad) and burstable T-family (t2, t3, t3a) instances. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal (.metal) configurations. Larger instances carry more CPU and memory, so your hourly rate scales with the size you choose. You are billed only for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one unit of hourly billing represent for this product?
One unit is one hour that a single virtual machine runs on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size. You are billed per running hour, and each separate instance you launch meters its own hours independently.
Am I charged when the virtual machine is stopped or shut down?
The software charge meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still incur separate AWS charges while the instance is stopped. Contact AWS for storage billing details.
How does my hourly rate change if I pick a larger instance size?
Each instance type has its own hourly rate. Larger sizes, like 24xlarge or bare-metal (.metal), carry more CPU and memory, so their hourly rate is higher. Burstable T-family sizes like nano and micro meter smaller amounts. You pay the rate tied to the size you launch.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
