You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance type you run this load balancer on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size across the c5, c5d, m5, m5d, r5, and r5d families. These families balance compute, memory, and local storage differently. Sizes range from large up to 24xlarge and metal, so your hourly rate scales with the compute and memory you select. You choose the instance that fits your throughput and traffic needs. Billing is usage-based, so you pay only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
Each hourly unit maps to one running EC2 instance of the type you select, from large up to 24xlarge and metal. The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges, though underlying AWS storage fees may still apply.
What features come with this load balancer regardless of which instance type I run?
Every instance includes core application delivery features. You get Layer 4/7 load balancing for all TCP/UDP traffic, high availability, traffic scheduling and persistence, content-based routing, caching, compression, HTTP/2, TLS/SSL offload and re-encryption, a Kubernetes ingress controller, IPv6 support, and quality-of-service client limiting. Firmware updates are included.
How do I decide which instance type to pick, and does moving between types affect my bill?
Pick the instance that matches your throughput and traffic needs. The c5 and c5d families favor compute, m5 and m5d balance compute and memory, and r5 and r5d favor memory. The d variants add local storage. Moving to a larger size raises your hourly rate; the software runs with the same features across all platforms.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
(1) Start a new EC2 instance from AWS console (2) Launch Kemp VLM instance (3) Configure instance details (4) Select VPC and Public IP in network options (5) Specify security group with port 8443 defined at a minimum (6) Specify key pair to be used for initial SSH access (7) Connect to LoadMaster via SSH for initial licensing and setup (8) Change password. Default username is 'bal' and initial password will be the 'Instance ID' of the VM instance. (9) Connect to LoadMaster via Web User Interface by using the appropriate assigned IP address and continue configuration for your application environment.
