This listing is free software, so you pay no license fee for the Minimal Ubuntu 22.04 LTS image itself. Each dimension maps to an AWS EC2 instance type, billed hourly. You choose the instance that fits your workload, and your cost scales with the compute, memory, storage, or GPU capacity you select. Options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, accelerated-computing, and high-memory families, from small sizes up to bare-metal configurations. The software carries no charge across all instances; you pay only the standard AWS infrastructure rate for the chosen instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually pay for when the software itself is free?
The Minimal Ubuntu 22.04 LTS image carries no software license fee. You pay only the standard AWS infrastructure rate for the EC2 instance type you choose, billed per hour. Your bill reflects the compute, memory, storage, or GPU capacity of the selected instance, not the operating system.
Am I charged for the software when an instance is stopped or paused?
The image has no software charge in any state, running or stopped. When an instance is stopped, you stop paying the hourly compute rate for that instance. Underlying AWS storage for the attached volume may still accrue, but the Ubuntu image adds no license cost at any point.
What does each instance-type dimension map to, and how does my cost scale?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type, billed per hour of running time. The families cover general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, accelerated-computing, and high-memory workloads. Larger sizes within a family carry more vCPUs, memory, or GPUs, so your hourly AWS rate rises with the capacity you select.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.

To connect to instance, your SSH client must support newer standards.

Review from a verified AWS customer
Those who are unaware of the following change may find that they cannot connect to this type of instance with SSH. (It loses a star because this requirement was not apparent and required no little effort to uncover.)
With the 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish release, an older, vulnerable standard for SSH communication has been deprecated. That is an improvement in security, but it has consequences that can mysteriously cause grief to those who are not forewarned.
PuTTY 0.74 or earlier won't connect via SSH. (Upgrade to PuTTY 0.76 or later.) The current latest WinSCP (5.19.6) or earlier also will not connect via SSH, but version 5.20 (currently in beta) will.
On the plus side, besides being a very popular distribution, Ubuntu instances (along with Amazon Linux and Windows) are eligible for AWS Per Second Billing. https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/
Of course, the Ubuntu LTS images get the additional advantage of Long Term Support.
