Ubuntu Pro is a comprehensive subscription for security, support, and compliance, optimized for AWS EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, and providing an option to extend for 5 additional years through the Legacy add-on. With Ubuntu Pro, you can enjoy enhanced security coverage that protects the OS and expands security maintenance to thousands of packages, including critical applications such as Apache Kafka, NGINX, MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and more.
The unique features of Ubuntu Pro empower teams to freely consume open-source software while simultaneously meeting security, governance, and compliance requirements.
Features of Ubuntu Pro for EKS:
Pro containers entitlement: Deploying an Ubuntu Pro cluster enables your team to run Pro containers at an unlimited scale, ensuring consistent security across your entire containerized environment.
Kernel Livepatch: Enables in-memory application of kernel security patches without rebooting, minimizing downtime.
Expanded Security Maintenance: Provides up to 15 years of security updates (with Legacy add-on), ensuring long-term coverage for enterprise applications.
Coverage for the widest software ecosystem in container: Expands security maintenance to thousands of packages, including critical applications such as Apache Kafka, NGINX, MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and runtimes such as PHP and Python, allowing teams to consume a vast collection of open source software in full compliance with internal security, governance, and regulatory criteria.
Canonical Landscape license included: Landscape, Canonical's official fleet management tool, automates security management tasks across your Ubuntu estate, available on request, streamlining control and security.
Ubuntu Pro for EKS remains fully compatible with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS for EKS, adding additional security, compliance, and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations, including containers running on the cluster.
These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu Pro worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates, Cloudformation templates and many other mechanisms.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro running on your EKS worker nodes. Each dimension maps to a specific Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instance type. Pricing scales with instance size, since it is based on the instance's vCPU count and metered by usage time. Smaller instances like t4g.nano cost less per hour than larger ones like m8g.48xlarge or metal instances. You choose the instance types matching your workload. All dimensions deliver the same Ubuntu Pro security and compliance coverage, so the price difference reflects compute size, not feature level.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly charge cover for a given instance type?
Each hourly rate covers the Ubuntu Pro license running on one worker node of that EC2 instance type. The price reflects the instance's vCPU count. Billing is metered by the second while the node runs, so you pay only for actual running time.
Am I charged for worker nodes that are stopped or scaled down?
The Ubuntu Pro license meters running time only. Nodes you stop or terminate stop accruing software charges. When your cluster scales worker pools up or down, charges follow the instances actually running. Underlying AWS infrastructure fees are billed separately by AWS.
Does a larger instance type change the Ubuntu Pro features I receive?
No. All instance types deliver the same Ubuntu Pro security patches, FIPS and Common Criteria certified components, CIS and DISA STIG hardening options, and Kernel Livepatch. The higher hourly rate on larger instances reflects more vCPUs, not extra features.
