Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run. The dimensions map to specific instance types across three families: t2, t3, m3, and m4. Sizes range from medium up to 16xlarge. Larger instances carry more compute and memory, so hourly rates scale with the capacity you choose. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment. Pick the instance type that fits your workload; you can change sizes as your needs shift. The software adds security, monitoring, and support on top of the running instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for these hourly dimensions?
Each dimension bills per hour for one running EC2 instance of that type. The instance type sets the compute and memory you get. You pay the hourly rate for every hour that specific instance runs, counted separately per instance you launch.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage or other resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the software meters running hours only.
How does hourly billing behave if I switch instance types?
You pay the rate tied to whichever instance type runs during each hour. If you change sizes, billing follows the new instance type from that point. There is no upfront commitment, so you can move between t2, t3, m3, and m4 types as your workload shifts.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
