You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this pre-configured Zulip image on. The software carries no separate license fee; your cost tracks the compute size you choose. Options span general-purpose burstable families (t2, t3, t3a), balanced compute families (m4, m5, m5a, m6a, m6i, m7i, m7a), compute-optimized families (c5, c5a, c6a), and memory-optimized families (r5, r5a, r6a, r6i). Sizes range from micro and small up to xlarge. Larger instances cost more per hour. Pick a size based on your team count; scale up as message history grows.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit actually cover, and does the software carry its own license fee?
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the type you select, loaded with the pre-configured Zulip image. The software itself carries no separate license fee. Your hourly charge reflects the compute size only. Larger instance families and sizes cost more per hour to run.
Am I charged when I stop the Zulip instance, for example overnight or during quiet periods?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. If you stop the instance from the EC2 Instance state dropdown, hourly software metering pauses. You can restart it later. Note that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume, separate from the software.
Which instance type should I pick, and what happens to cost as my team grows?
A small burstable size works as a baseline for a small team. Move to a larger size as your user count and stored message history grow. Switching instance types changes your hourly rate accordingly. You choose the type at launch and can relaunch on a bigger size later.

This deployment launches Zulip within a secure virtual infrastructure, providing a reliable environment for team communication and channel management workflows. The AMI is preinstalled and configured, allowing users to create organizations, configure streams, and start messaging immediately after launch and domain setup. Users access the application through a web browser, desktop app, or mobile app, with SSL automatically configured against the supplied domain. This architecture is designed for secure, organized team communication and simplified deployment workflows.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
