This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for a secure, ready-to-use Ruby on Rails 8.1 stack with Ruby 3.4 and MySQL. Build and run Rails apps on a server that is ready from day one, with unique passwords for every instance.
Ruby on Rails is an open source web framework for building database-backed web applications quickly. Its conventions, generators and huge library of gems help small teams ship features fast. This image gives developers and startups a ready Rails server in minutes, with Ruby, Rails and MySQL installed and a sample app already running.
What is included: Ruby on Rails 8.1.3.1 with Ruby 3.4 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, a sample Rails app on port 3000 connected to MySQL 8.0, Apache serving phpMyAdmin for database administration, and Webmin 2.660 for server administration. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance sets its own MySQL root and Webmin passwords, a new Rails secret key, a new application database password and a new phpMyAdmin secret, MySQL listens only on the server itself, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Ruby on Rails is open source software licensed under MIT, and Ruby under the Ruby licence. Rails and Ruby on Rails are trademarks of David Heinemeier Hansson. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
Ready in minutes: launch the instance and open port 3000 to see a running Rails 8 app. Ruby 3.4, Rails 8.1, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and Webmin are already installed and connected.
Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. Every instance sets its own MySQL and Webmin passwords on first boot and a new Rails secret and database password are generated, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
Start building straight away: a sample app connected to MySQL shows the whole stack working, so you can replace it with your own code and deploy.

Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you choose to run this Ruby on Rails machine image. The software itself is open source and needs no licence key, so each rate reflects compute capacity only. Dimensions map to AWS instance families: general-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage-optimized (d, i, h) and accelerated (g, p, f, inf, trn, vt). Within each family, larger sizes carry more vCPU and memory, so the hourly rate rises as you scale up. Pick the instance that fits your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Am I charged the hourly rate when my EC2 instance is stopped?
The hourly software rate meters running instance time only. A stopped instance accrues no software charge for that period. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, such as the 20 GiB gp3 root volume, while the instance is stopped. Restarting the instance resumes hourly software metering.
Does the hourly price include any software licence fee for the Ruby on Rails stack?
No. The bundled software is open source under the MIT licence and needs no licence key. Each hourly rate reflects the EC2 compute capacity of the instance type you pick. You pay your cloud provider for the compute and storage the instance uses, not a separate software charge.
What do I actually receive, and is there a runtime agent adding cost?
You receive a pre-built machine image (an AMI) with the software installed and configured, launched by AMI ID in your account. There is no runtime agent, sidecar, or control plane. Images you launch keep running unchanged, so no ongoing vendor fee beyond the hourly instance rate applies.

Vendor refund policy
Software charges are billed hourly, only while your instance runs. You can stop charges at any time by terminating the instance or cancelling your subscription. Charges already incurred are not refundable.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
