See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
The software itself is free. You pay only the hourly rate for the AWS EC2 instance type you choose to run it on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, billed per hour of use. Options span general-purpose (m-series), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r- and x-series), and storage-optimized (i-series) families across several generations and sizes. Pricing scales with the instance you select: smaller types like t3.nano cost less per hour, while larger types like c3.2xlarge or x2iedn.xlarge cost more. Match your instance choice to your dataset size and processing needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Am I charged when the EC2 instance running the viewer is stopped?
You pay the hourly software rate only while the instance runs. Fully stopped instances stop accruing hourly software charges. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software meter counts running time only.
What does one hourly charge cover, and what runs on it?
Each hourly charge covers one running EC2 instance of the type you selected. That instance runs the deployable software image, reading data from your S3 buckets and writing results back to S3. You are billed per instance-hour of runtime, per the instance type chosen.
If I run several instances at once, how does that affect my bill?
Each running instance bills separately at its own hourly rate. Running multiple instances multiplies the hourly charge by the count of active instances. Rates differ by instance type, so a mix of types produces different per-hour charges that add together on the same invoice.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
