You pay by the hour for Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Datacenter running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. The pricing has no tiers or plans. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance you select. Options span several instance families and sizes, from small burstable types to large compute-heavy and metal instances. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, and networking, so their hourly rate scales up accordingly. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for a given instance type?
Each hourly unit covers one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select, with the Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Datacenter license included. The rate combines the software license and the compute for that specific instance size. You pay for each hour the instance runs.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software license meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volumes may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are billed separately by AWS, not by this listing.
How does my hourly cost change if I switch to a larger instance type?
Your rate is tied to the specific instance type you run. Choosing a larger family or size increases CPU, memory, and networking, so the hourly rate rises accordingly. You are not locked into one size. Switching instances simply changes which dimension bills for the hours that instance runs.
