What does one hourly unit cover for each instance type dimension?
One unit is one hour of running the Windows Server Core 2016 Datacenter software on a single EC2 instance of the type you chose. You pay per instance-hour for each running instance. Larger instance types carry proportionally larger hourly rates because they provide more compute capacity.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the volume while stopped, but those are separate from this listing's software metering.
If I switch to a larger instance type, how does my cost change?
Each dimension bills independently for the hours that instance runs. Moving from a smaller to a larger instance changes your rate to that instance's hourly price for the hours it runs. The change is manual — you select the instance type when you launch. No automatic tier upgrades apply.
