You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance size, so pricing scales with the compute power you choose. Smaller instances like t2.nano and t2.micro suit light workloads, while larger instances like x1e.32xlarge and i3.metal serve heavy compute, memory, or GPU needs. The software runs on the instance you select, and hourly charges reflect that instance's capacity. You can start, stop, or resize at any time, and billing tracks actual usage hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for a given instance type?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The hourly rate covers the software running on that instance. Each instance type maps to set compute, memory, or GPU capacity. Running two instances of the same type bills two hourly charges.
Am I charged when I stop or pause the EC2 instance?
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance's attached volumes. Billing resumes when you restart the instance.
How do I support multiple developers on this platform?
code-server does not support multi-user collaboration on its own. To serve several developers, install multiple code-server instances through the Websoft9 console. Each instance runs on its own EC2 instance, so each adds its own hourly charge based on the instance type you pick.
