This product has charges associated with it for RDP and Docker optimization. Launch Docker containers and connect via remote desktop in minutes with this pre-configured Ubuntu 22.04 LTS AMI - ideal for developers without dedicated DevOps staff.
Pre-configured Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Desktop with Docker and Remote Desktop Access
This is a repackaged open-source software product. Additional charges apply for RDP and Docker optimization applied to the base Ubuntu 22.04 LTS image.
This AMI eliminates the manual setup of Docker and xrdp on Ubuntu, giving you a ready-to-use containerized development environment with full GUI access via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Designed for solo developers, small teams, and agencies who need container workflows without dedicated DevOps staff.
What You Get
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS - Canonical's long-term support release with security updates through 2027
Docker Engine pre-installed and configured - Container runtime ready for immediate use
xrdp server pre-installed - Connect to the full Ubuntu desktop from any RDP client (Windows Remote Desktop, Remmina, etc.)
Optimized Docker daemon settings - Pre-tuned configuration for container performance and security
Use Case: Freelance Developer Demoing Client Applications
A freelance developer needs to demo a 3-container microservice stack (web frontend, API backend, database) to a client. Instead of spending 45+ minutes installing Ubuntu Desktop, Docker, and xrdp from scratch, they launch this AMI, connect via RDP within minutes, run docker-compose up, and present the working application through the graphical browser on the remote desktop.
Additional Use Cases
Staging environments - Spin up containerized WordPress, Node.js, or Python applications for client review with visual access
CI/CD build environments - Run container builds on a GUI-accessible instance for debugging pipelines visually
Training and education - Provide students or team members with identical Docker environments accessible via any RDP client
Rapid prototyping - Deploy and test multi-container applications without local hardware constraints
Getting Started
Subscribe to this AMI and launch an EC2 instance (recommended: t3.medium or larger with at least 4 GB RAM)
Configure your security group to allow inbound traffic on port 3389 (RDP) and port 22 (SSH)
Connect via SSH using your EC2 key pair to set your desktop user password
Open your RDP client and connect to the instance public IP on port 3389
Log in with your configured credentials and begin deploying containers
Why Choose This Image Over Manual Setup
Save setup time - Skip the manual installation and configuration of Docker Engine, Docker Compose, xrdp, and desktop environment packages
Pre-tuned Docker daemon - Configuration settings applied for container logging, storage driver optimization, and resource management
Security-conscious defaults - Reduced attack surface through pre-applied configuration hardening
Ubuntu LTS reliability - Regular security patches and long-term support from Canonical through 2027
Requirements and Limitations
Minimum instance type: t3.medium (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) recommended for running Docker alongside the desktop environment
Network: Security group must allow port 3389 (RDP) and port 22 (SSH)
Storage: Minimum 20 GB EBS volume recommended; additional storage needed based on container images
RDP client required: Windows Remote Desktop Connection, Remmina (Linux), or Microsoft Remote Desktop (macOS)

AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software, billed separately from the AWS infrastructure charge. Pricing scales with the instance type you choose. Options span general-purpose (t2, t3, m3, m5a), compute-optimized (c3, c5, c5a), memory-optimized (r3, r5a), and GPU-accelerated (g3, p2, p3) families. Within each family, hourly rates rise as instance size grows, since bigger instances carry more CPU, memory, or GPU resources. You select the size that fits your workload, run it only when needed, and stop charges when you shut it down.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get on the instance regardless of which size I choose?
Every instance runs Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, pre-configured with Docker and a remote desktop (RDP) setup. The image is security-hardened for enterprise and compliance needs. Only the underlying compute resources change with instance size — the base software stack stays the same.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or shut down?
The software is metered by the hour only while the instance runs. When you stop or shut down the instance, hourly software charges end. Separate AWS storage fees for the stopped instance's disk may still apply, but those are billed by AWS, not the software.
Why do GPU instances like p3 and g3 cost more than t2 or t3 options?
Hourly rates reflect the hardware behind each instance type. GPU families (g3, p2, p3) add graphics or AI acceleration hardware, so they carry higher rates. General-purpose t2 and t3 types use smaller shared CPU resources. You pick the family and size that match your workload needs.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
