You pay by the hour for Basic Linux Stream 9 running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. The price you pay tracks the instance you select, not a software tier. Options span several families: burstable t2 and t3/t3a instances for lighter workloads, and general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5ad, m5n, and m5dn instances for steadier compute. Within each family, sizes scale from nano and micro up through 24xlarge and bare-metal. Larger instances cost more per hour because they provide more CPU, memory, and other resources. You are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed hour cover, and what am I actually paying for?
You pay per hour for the Basic Linux Stream 9 software running on one EC2 instance of your chosen type. One unit equals one running virtual machine, metered by the hour. The rate reflects the instance size you pick, from nano up to bare-metal.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges apply only while the instance is running. When you stop or power off the instance, hourly software billing stops. Note that underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance may still apply separately from this software charge.
How does cost change if I move to a larger instance size?
The hourly rate tracks the instance type you select. Moving from a smaller size, like micro, to a larger size, like 24xlarge or bare-metal, increases the hourly rate because those instances provide more CPU and memory. You are billed at the rate of whichever instance runs.
