Ubuntu Pro is a comprehensive subscription for security, support, and compliance, optimized for AWS EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, and providing an option to extend for 5 additional years through the Legacy add-on. With Ubuntu Pro, you can enjoy enhanced security coverage that protects the OS and expands security maintenance to thousands of packages, including critical applications such as Apache Kafka, NGINX, MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and more.
The unique features of Ubuntu Pro empower teams to freely consume open-source software while simultaneously meeting security, governance, and compliance requirements.
Features of Ubuntu Pro for EKS:
Pro containers entitlement: Deploying an Ubuntu Pro cluster enables your team to run Pro containers at an unlimited scale, ensuring consistent security across your entire containerized environment.
Kernel Livepatch: Enables in-memory application of kernel security patches without rebooting, minimizing downtime.
Expanded Security Maintenance: Provides up to 15 years of security updates (with Legacy add-on), ensuring long-term coverage for enterprise applications.
Coverage for the widest software ecosystem in container: Expands security maintenance to thousands of packages, including critical applications such as Apache Kafka, NGINX, MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and runtimes such as PHP and Python, allowing teams to consume a vast collection of open source software in full compliance with internal security, governance, and regulatory criteria.
Canonical Landscape license included: Landscape, Canonical's official fleet management tool, automates security management tasks across your Ubuntu estate, available on request, streamlining control and security.
Ubuntu Pro for EKS remains fully compatible with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS for EKS, adding additional security, compliance, and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations, including containers running on the cluster.
These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu Pro worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates, Cloudformation templates and many other mechanisms.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for each Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instance running this Ubuntu Pro image on your EKS worker nodes. Every dimension maps to one specific instance type, grouped into families: general purpose (t4g, m-series, a1), compute-optimized (c-series, hpc7g), memory-optimized (r-series, x-series), storage-optimized (i-series, im/is), and GPU (g5g). Within each family, price scales with instance size, from nano and medium up to metal and 48xlarge. Billing is usage-based and metered per instance-hour, so your cost rises with the number and size of instances you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and how is it measured?
Each hourly unit covers one running Arm-based EC2 worker node using this Ubuntu Pro image. Pricing is tied to the instance's vCPU count and metered by the second. You pay for the time each node runs, so larger instances with more vCPUs cost more per hour.
Am I charged for worker nodes that are stopped or scaled down?
Charges apply only while an instance runs. Because billing is metered by the second, stopped or terminated nodes stop accruing software charges. When auto-scaling removes nodes, your software cost drops with them. Underlying AWS storage fees for stopped instances are separate from this software charge.
Is this software charge separate from the underlying EC2 compute cost?
Yes. This listing meters the Ubuntu Pro software layer per instance-hour on your EKS worker nodes. The EC2 compute cost for each Arm-based instance is billed separately by AWS. Both appear on your AWS invoice, and both scale with the number and size of instances you run.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
