What does one billing unit represent for this document store?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. Each active instance meters its own hours separately. If you run several instances, each one accrues charges independently, even when they share the same instance type.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
Software charges apply per instance-hour while the instance runs. Fully stopped instances do not accrue software charges. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software meters running time only.
How do the different instance families affect what I pay?
You choose one instance type, and its hourly rate reflects the compute, memory, and storage that family provides.
