Overview
Firefly III is an open source, self-hosted personal finance manager that uses double-entry bookkeeping to give you a precise, honest picture of your money. Record expenses and income, organise them into budgets, categories and tags, set savings goals with piggy banks, and let automatic rules tidy everything up. All of your financial data stays private on infrastructure you control - no third-party SaaS platform ever touches your transactions.
This AMI delivers Firefly III 6.6.3 fully installed and configured so a complete personal finance service is running within minutes of launch - eliminating the hours of manual Laravel, PHP, nginx, and database setup required by a DIY deployment.
Why This AMI Instead of Manual Installation
Deploying Firefly III from source requires configuring PHP extensions, setting up a web server, provisioning a database, running migrations, and managing environment variables. This image handles all of that at build time. Unlike Docker-based approaches that require container orchestration knowledge, this AMI boots as a self-contained appliance with no external dependencies. Unlike configurations that rely on a separate RDS or MySQL instance, the built-in SQLite storage means zero database administration and simpler backups - just snapshot the dedicated data volume.
Application Stack
Firefly III is a Laravel application running on:
- PHP 8.5with OPcache and every required extension
- nginx web server serving the Laravel public document root
- SQLite storage - fully self-contained with no separate database server
- Dedicated, independently resizable data volume holding application code, configuration, database, uploads and storage
- Database schema migrated and seeded at build time
External Integrations and Data Import
Firefly III connects to external financial services and supports multiple import formats:
- Spectre (Salt Edge) for automated bank connections
- GoCardless (formerly Nordigen) for European bank account access
- CSV, camt.xml, and OFX file import
- Firefly III Data Importer tool for scheduled or bulk imports
- Documented REST API for custom integrations and automation
These integrations let you pull transaction data from your banks automatically or import historical records from other finance tools.
Secure First Boot
On first boot, a one-shot service generates a fresh application encryption key and cron token unique to that instance, sets a fresh administrator password, and writes credentials to a root-only file. No shared or default credentials ship in the image. Many competing AMIs ship with static default passwords - this image eliminates that risk entirely.
Example Workflow: Freelancer Tracking Business and Personal Finances
A freelancer with three bank accounts and two credit cards launches the AMI, connects their accounts via GoCardless, and imports six months of CSV history. They create rules to auto-categorise client payments as income and recurring subscriptions as expenses. Monthly, they review the budget dashboard, adjust piggy bank savings goals, and export reports for tax preparation - all without sharing data with a third-party service.
Ready To Use
Browse to the instance address, sign in as the generated administrator, and start recording accounts, transactions, budgets and bills. Or register your own first user, which becomes the owner of the installation.

Highlights
- Firefly III pre-configured and running in minutes - eliminates hours of manual Laravel, PHP, nginx, and database setup. Self-contained SQLite storage means no separate RDS or MySQL instance to provision, manage, or pay for. Connects to banks via Spectre (Salt Edge) and GoCardless, imports CSV, camt.xml, and OFX files, and offers a full REST API for custom automation.
- Hardened security without default credentials - every instance generates its own unique encryption key, cron token, and administrator password on first boot, stored in a root-only file. Unlike many competing images that ship with static shared passwords, this AMI ensures no two instances share secrets, reducing credential-reuse risk from the moment you launch.
- 24/7 expert support from cloudimg by email and live chat with a one-hour average response for critical issues. Engineers assist with deployment, data import from banks and files, budgeting rule configuration, upgrades, performance tuning, and storage administration - dedicated help that community-only open source support cannot provide.
