Microsoft SQL Server 2022 on AWS - Production-Ready in Minutes
Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is the enterprise relational database platform for mission-critical workloads, analytics, and high availability. This AMI delivers SQL Server 2022 fully installed and configured so your database server is running within minutes of launch - no manual setup, no shared default passwords, and no data mixed onto the OS disk.
Who This Is For
This listing is built for DBAs and engineering teams migrating from on-premises SQL Server, SaaS companies scaling their data tier on AWS, and organizations that need expert support without hiring dedicated database infrastructure staff.
Available Editions
Choose the delivery option that matches your workload:
- Enterprise - Full feature set for mission-critical scale, ledger tables, and contained availability groups
- Standard - Mid-tier production workloads with core database engine features
- Web - Low-cost edition for public web-facing applications and hosting
- Express - Free entry-level edition for small databases (ideal for evaluating this AMI at no software cost before upgrading)
- Developer - Complete Enterprise feature set licensed for development and test use only
Buyers can launch the Express or Developer edition to evaluate the AMI, the dedicated volume layout, and the first-boot credential flow before committing to a paid edition.
Why cloudimg
Many competing SQL Server AMIs store database files on the root volume, ship with shared default passwords, and offer no included support. cloudimg addresses each of these pain points:
- Isolated data volume - Your database files live on a dedicated gp3 EBS volume at /var/opt/mssql, separate from the OS disk. Resize storage independently without snapshots of the entire root volume.
- Secure first boot - A one-shot systemd service generates a unique SA password and cloudimg SQL login on every new instance. No shared or default credentials ship in the image.
- 24/7 expert support - Critical issues receive a one-hour average response. Get help with deployment, edition selection, HA configuration, performance tuning, and backup strategy.
Application Stack
- mssql-server from the official Microsoft APT repository
- mssql-tools18 and sqlcmd for command-line administration
- Service runs on port 1433 and starts on boot via systemd
- TLS enforced for client connections
SQL Server 2022 Features
- Ledger for tamper-evident tables
- Query Store enabled by default
- Intelligent query processing with parameter-sensitive plan optimization
- Contained availability groups
- Built-in query intelligence and security hardening
Dedicated Data Volume
SQL Server data and log files reside on a dedicated gp3 EBS volume mounted at /var/opt/mssql. The gp3 baseline delivers 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s throughput, independently scalable as your database grows - without touching the OS disk.
Secure First Boot
On first boot a one-shot service generates a unique SA password, creates a cloudimg SQL login, removes the build-time memory cap, and writes all credentials to /root/mssql-credentials.txt (root access required). No shared or default credentials exist in the image.
Example Use Case
A SaaS provider running a multi-tenant web application on AWS launches the Web edition on an r6i.xlarge instance. Their 200 GB transactional database handles real-time OLTP during the day and nightly ETL jobs. The dedicated gp3 volume is scaled to 6,000 IOPS for peak load, and cloudimg support assists with Query Store tuning and automated backup configuration.
Getting Started
Retrieve credentials from /root/mssql-credentials.txt and connect with sqlcmd or any SQL Server client on port 1433. Need help choosing the right edition or instance size? Contact cloudimg for a free deployment review.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release of SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition.
Additional details
Usage instructions
Launch the instance and wait about two minutes for first-boot credential generation. Connect via SSH on port 22 using the default login user for the AMI. Retrieve the SA password with: sudo cat /root/mssql-credentials.txt. Connect to SQL Server with: sqlcmd -S 127.0.0.1 -U sa -P '<SA_PASSWORD>' -C. SQL Server listens on port 1433; add port 1433 to the security group to allow external clients. The data volume at /var/opt/mssql is a dedicated EBS volume, resizable in the AWS console (run resize2fs after).
