    M3MentalHealth.org - A Multi-Dimensional Mood Monitor

     Info
    Deployed on AWS
Mental health symptoms often spread across several diagnostic categories and can collectively impair a person's ability to manage daily life. The historical focus on just one or two conditions is about to change. Recently updated USPSTF guidelines now endorse assessing for anxiety and depression together rather than individually, and the USPSTF has warned for years that anyone identified with depression must also be assessed for the risk of bipolar disorder. Too often, and sometimes with grave consequences, these recommendations have gone unheeded. M3 gives individuals and their clinicians a clear view of these problems, greatly helping with personalized care.

The Structural Case for Multi-Domain Screening: Two published NIMH statistics tell the story. 23.1% of U.S. adults have Any Mental Illness (AMI), while only 8.3% have a Major Depressive Episode. That means depression accounts for just 35.9% of all diagnosable mental illness; the other 64.1%, including anxiety disorders (19.1% prevalence, more than twice that of depression), PTSD, and bipolar disorder, lies entirely outside the reach of depression-only screening. Apply the PHQ-9's 82% sensitivity to that 35.9% ceiling and its functional detection of AMI is roughly 29%. A validated multi-domain instrument at 83% sensitivity across the full construct detects roughly 83%, a 54-percentage-point gap. No screening tool limited to depression can close it, no matter how well it performs within its scope. (Modeled estimates from NIMH prevalence data: nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics)

A growing body of research provides a biological basis for understanding why mood disorders, if left untreated, can become harder to manage over time, and why sustained treatment, whether through psychotherapy, medication, or both, is so important. It also counters the stigma often attached to mental health treatment: these are not merely emotional responses but measurable changes in brain structure and chemistry. Effective treatment improves sleep, relationships, work performance, and overall wellness.

M3's Clinical Validation: M3 is a self-rated, easy-to-complete, 3-minute, 27-item questionnaire. Using a cutoff score of 33, M3 identifies 85% of patients with a confirmed mood or anxiety diagnosis, while only 1 in 10 patients with a score above 33 are diagnosis-free. In a primary care comparison study, M3 demonstrated validity as an efficient tool for screening multiple common psychiatric illnesses, including bipolar disorder and PTSD, in a single assessment. Its diagnostic accuracy equals that of currently used single-disorder screens, with the additional benefit of being combined into one tool. Eighty-three percent of clinicians reviewed the M3 report in 30 seconds or fewer, and 80% found it helpful in reviewing patients' emotional health.

Independent recognition: the M3 Checklist is also offered to healthcare providers nationally by Labcorp, which describes it as nationally recognized, peer reviewed, and clinically validated, covering depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD in one assessment. Leading health authorities including the WHO, USPSTF, and NCQA now support multidimensional, evidence-based assessment that identifies these conditions together in one brief encounter, ending what experts call the depression bias in mental health screening.

For hospitals and health plans, HEDIS and Star Ratings: in August 2024 the NCQA expanded the HEDIS measure for follow-up after mental health related emergency department visits and hospitalizations, with tracked conditions now including anxiety diagnoses, phobia diagnoses, intentional self-harm codes, and suicidal ideation (R45.851). M3 gives facilities a validated way to assess patients at discharge and monitor them afterward to meet NCQA guidelines, supporting HEDIS performance, Star Ratings, and reimbursement while reducing readmissions. The program operates within existing CPT codes, including collaborative care and remote patient monitoring, at no incremental cost to the facility, and integrates with leading EHRs including Epic, Cerner, Athena, and eClinicalWorks.

Mental health and pain, together: the platform pairs the M3 Checklist with the PEG pain scale, because the two travel together. An NIH-supported study published in the journal PAIN found that adults living with chronic pain were about five times more likely to report symptoms of anxiety or depression than those without chronic pain, yet the two are often evaluated separately. M3 provides separate mental health and pain scores that individuals can share with their healthcare professionals and repeat over time to monitor changes.

Medicare and payment: Original Medicare beneficiaries can complete the review at no cost through m3mentalhealth.org, with follow-up care typically covered under Medicare Part B. Individuals not on Original Medicare can pay per assessment by card, HSA, or FSA, and clinics or partners can onboard patients with an organization promo code. Results are de-identified and stored on HIPAA-eligible cloud infrastructure.

M3MentalHealth.org was created by the M3Info.AI team of psychiatrists, researchers, and technologists committed to one mission: giving every person a clear, clinically validated picture of their mental health in a single number.

    Highlights

    • Four conditions, one 3-minute screen. A single validated 27-item check-in covers depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar together (Gaynes et al., Annals of Family Medicine, 2010), the same instrument offered to clinicians through Labcorp. Depression-only screeners miss the majority of mental illness; M3 sees the whole picture and tracks it visit over visit.
    • Billable, metered, procurement-free. Reimbursable via CPT 96127. $11 per completed assessment, metered straight through your existing AWS bill: no new vendor contract, no separate invoice, and Marketplace purchases count toward your organization's committed AWS spend.
    • Drops into your clinical workflow. HIPAA-aligned on AWS, encrypted in transit and at rest. Results are standards-coded (LOINC 71891-6, ICD-10-CM and SNOMED CT crosswalks, HL7 FHIR R4 export) so scores land cleanly in the chart and quality reporting. Patients get a plain-language report with crisis resources (988) always present.
