See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the Debian 11 image running on your chosen EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage that instance provides. Smaller shared-CPU types like t2, t3, and t3a run lightweight workloads. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families cover larger needs, up to bare-metal options. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment. Vendor support is included with the image.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to for each pricing dimension?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type running the Debian 11 image. One unit equals one running instance for one hour. The instance type sets the compute, memory, and storage you get. Larger families like m5.metal give bare-metal hardware, while t2 and t3 types share CPU capacity.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped. There is no upfront commitment, so you pay only for the hours each instance runs.
Can I move my workload between instance types, and how does that affect billing?
You can run the image on any listed instance type. Each type carries its own hourly rate tied to its compute, memory, and storage. Switching to a larger family changes your hourly charge accordingly. You are billed per running instance, so cost follows whichever type is active.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
