You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Apache Tomcat 9 image running on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, you pick one EC2 instance type, and your hourly software rate matches the compute size you choose. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter workloads, plus general-purpose m4, m5, m6, and m7 families in many sizes, from nano up to metal. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You add AWS infrastructure charges separately. Billing runs only while an instance is active, so costs scale with your actual usage.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive when I select an instance type like m6i.large or t3.medium?
You receive a preconfigured machine image with Apache Tomcat 9 installed on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The instance type you pick sets the compute size, meaning the CPU and memory of the underlying server. Each hour a running instance uses is billed at that size's software rate.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but that is separate from the Tomcat software charge. Billing resumes when you start the instance again.
How does my bill combine the software charge with AWS infrastructure costs?
Two charges apply at once for a running instance. The software rate covers the preconfigured Tomcat image at your chosen instance size. AWS infrastructure fees for compute, storage, and network are billed separately by AWS. Both appear together, and larger instance types raise the software portion.
