You pay by the hour for a preconfigured image that runs Apache Tomcat 9 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, you pick one Amazon EC2 instance type, and the hourly rate reflects that instance's size and family. Options range from small, burstable instances to large and bare-metal instances with many virtual CPUs and more memory. All options deliver the same software; they differ only in compute capacity. Your cost scales with the instance you choose and the hours you keep it running.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for the hourly rate on a chosen instance type?
You get a preconfigured machine image running Apache Tomcat 9 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The hourly software charge covers that image on one Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select. Each instance type sets its own virtual CPU and memory capacity, which the hourly rate reflects.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running time per instance-hour. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Can I switch to a different instance type later, and how does that change my bill?
You pick one Amazon EC2 instance type per running instance. To change capacity, you launch or resize to a different type. The hourly rate then matches the new instance's size and family. There is no feature-based tier; only the selected instance drives your cost.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
