Overview
A saildrone is an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) that combines wind-powered propulsion technology and solar-powered meteorological and oceanographic sensors to perform autonomous long-range data collection missions in the harshest ocean environments.
This data set was collected from the first Saildrone Antarctic Circumnavigation. A fleet of 3 Saildrone unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) were launched from Bluff, New Zealand on January 19, 2019. SD-1022 and SD-1023 were damaged in the first 24 hours of the mission in winds gusting over 50 knots and 20 foot waves. They returned to New Zealand for servicing and were relaunched on May 10, 2019 with ruggedized wings. SD-1022 was recovered in South Africa on September 20, 2019 after sustaining damage in a storm.
SD-1022 was outfit with a Simrad WBT EK80 mini transceiver and transducer as well as the standard Saildrone metocean sensor suite . Its mission objectives were to collect acoustic backscatter data for krill and biomass studies and also to collect oceanographic and atmospheric data from the Southern Ocean.
This is a complete collection of data collected by SD-1022 while it was deployed from May 8, 2019 until September 20, 2019, which includes:
- Acoustic data: Raw EK80 backscatter data, and EK80 calibration data from SD-1022's 2018 mission in the Arctic for NOAA Fisheries
- Environmental data in a CF-compliant netCDF file collected from metocean sensors and USV telemetry transmitted in near realtime in 1-minute time-averaged resolution for the duration of the mission
- Raw environmental data in CF-compliant netCDF files collected from metocean sensors stored onboard the vehicle through the duration of the mission in 1-hz resolution in 24-hour files
- Raw wind data in CF-compliant netCDF files from the sonic anemometer and USV telemetry stored onboard the vehicle through the duration of the mission in 20-hz resolution in 24-hour files
