What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance dimension?
You get the AMI with preloaded media tooling running on the Arm-based (Graviton) instance you pick. The hourly rate covers the software licence for that instance size. Larger instances carry more vCPUs and memory, so their hourly rate is higher than smaller sizes.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while it is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Does the AMI itself cost the same across all instance types?
No single flat AMI fee applies. Your cost is set entirely by the instance dimension you choose. Each Graviton family and size has its own hourly rate. Switching to a different instance type changes your rate for the hours you run it.

Usage instructions
This AMI provides a pre-configured Amazon Linux 2023 environment optimized for media processing using FFmpeg, FFprobe, and MediaInfo. Follow the steps below to launch and use the AMI effectively. Launching the AMI Go to the AWS Marketplace and search for Acrux Media AMI. Click "Continue to Subscribe," then "Continue to Configuration." Choose the Amazon Linux 2023 version and select your preferred AWS region. Click "Continue to Launch," select an EC2 instance type (recommended: Graviton2/3 ARM64 instances), and configure networking settings. Click "Launch" and wait for the instance to initialize. Connecting to the Instance Use SSH to connect to the instance using the command: ssh -i your-key.pem ec2-user@your-instance-ip. Replace "your-key.pem" with your private key and "your-instance-ip" with the instance's public IP. Verifying Installed Software Once connected, verify the pre-installed tools. Check FFmpeg version with "ffmpeg -version". Check MediaInfo version with "mediainfo --version". Check Python and development tools with "python3 --version" and "gcc --version". Using FFmpeg for Media Processing To convert a video file to MP4, use "ffmpeg -i input.mov -vcodec h264 -acodec aac output.mp4". To extract audio from a video, use "ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -q:a 0 -map a output.mp3". Using MediaInfo for Metadata Extraction To get metadata for a media file, use "mediainfo input.mp4". Storage and Networking Considerations Attach an S3 bucket for large media storage. Ensure your security group allows inbound SSH (port 22) and any necessary media processing ports.
