You pay by the hour for the Ruby on Rails stack running on Windows Server 2019, billed through your AWS account. The price you pay depends only on the Amazon EC2 instance size you launch. Options span burstable T-family instances (t2, t3, t3a) for lighter or variable workloads and general-purpose M-family instances (m4, m6a, m7a) for steadier compute needs. Within each family, larger sizes carry more vCPU and memory and cost more per hour. Software support runs 24/7. Charges apply only while an instance runs, so scaling instances up or down changes your hourly cost.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing represent for a given instance type?
One hour equals one hour of runtime for a single running EC2 instance of that type. Each instance type (for example t3.medium or m6a.4xlarge) maps to a set amount of vCPU and memory. You pay the hourly software rate for that size while the instance runs.
Am I charged when I stop or terminate my instance?
Software charges apply only while an instance is running. When you stop or terminate an instance, the hourly software charge stops. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for their attached volumes, but the software meter counts running time only.
If I switch between a T-family and an M-family instance, how does my bill change?
Your hourly rate follows whichever instance type is running at the time. Burstable T-family sizes and general-purpose M-family sizes carry different per-hour rates. Changing size requires launching a different instance type, so the new hourly rate applies from the moment that instance runs.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
