The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the admin account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

Within each family, larger sizes carry higher hourly rates as vCPU and memory scale up. The software fee applies on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges. Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. Fully stopped instances do not accrue this fee. You still see standard AWS charges for storage attached to a stopped instance, but the Debian 13 image fee applies while the instance runs.
What does the hourly software fee cover, and what does my team still own?
The fee covers the hardened, PCI-focused Debian 13 operating-system baseline with monthly patched releases and US-based support. Your team still owns PCI scope, application security, AWS architecture, identity, network controls, logging, procedures, evidence retention, and assessor validation. The image hardens the OS layer only.
How is my total bill built from the instance type and the software fee?
Two charges combine on the same invoice. The Debian 13 software fee is set by the instance type you launch, billed per hour. AWS infrastructure charges for that instance apply separately. Both accrue for each hour you run. Larger instance sizes raise both amounts as vCPU and memory scale up.

Using PCI Compliant / Hardened Debian 13 (ARM)
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
