Amazon EC2 M7a Instances
General purpose instances powered by 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors
Amazon EC2 M7a instances, powered by 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors, deliver up to 50% higher performance compared to M6a instances. These instances support AVX-512, VNNI, and bfloat16, which enable support for more workloads, use Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) memory to enable high-speed access to data in memory, and deliver 2.25x more memory bandwidth compared to M6a instances.
One of the major differences between M7a instances and the previous generations of instances, such as M6a instances, is their vCPU to physical processor core mapping. Every vCPU on a M7a instance is a physical CPU core. This means there is no Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT). By contrast, every vCPU on prior generations such as M6a instances is a thread of a CPU core.
M7a instances are SAP-certified and ideal for applications that benefit from high performance and high throughput such as financial applications, application servers, simulation modeling, gaming, mid-size data stores, application development environments, and caching fleets.
AWS and AMD continue to collaborate to provide customers with cloud services that are designed to meet current and future computing requirements. Visit the AWS/AMD partner page for more information.
Benefits
High performance
M7a instances deliver a major leap in performance with up to 50% higher performance than M6a instances. Leveraging high performance cores can help you lower time to market for product development and enables you to consolidate workloads on fewer instances.
Lower TCO
M7a instances deliver a significant price performance improvement compared to M6a instances. Better price performance enables you to reduce your fleet size or use smaller instance sizes to lower costs while improving performance.
Flexibility and choice
M7a instances add to the broadest and deepest selection of EC2 instances in the cloud and come in 12 different sizes, including a bare-metal variant, that feature different amounts of vCPU, memory, networking, and storage. This enables you to run a broad range of general-purpose workloads.
Features
Powered by 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors
M7a instances are powered by 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors (code named Genoa) with a maximum frequency of 3.7 GHz. M7a instances include support for always-on memory encryption using AMD secure memory encryption (SME).
High-performance interfaces
M7a instances use leading edge DDR5 memory and deliver 2.25x more memory bandwidth compared to M6a instances. M7a instances support up to 40 Gbps bandwidth to Amazon EBS and up to 50 Gbps of networking bandwidth. And with M7a instances, you can attach up to 128 EBS volumes to an instance (compared to M6a, which allowed up to 28 EBS volume attachments to an instance).
Support for a variety of workloads
M7a instances offer new capabilities including AVX-512, VNNI, and bfloat16, which enable support for more workloads including convolutional neural network-based algorithms, financial analytics, and video encoding.
Built on AWS Nitro System
The AWS Nitro System is a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware and software to deliver high performance, high availability, and high security while also reducing virtualization overhead.

Customer Testimonials
"Benchmarking our API proxy endpoints, the front door of the Netflix service stack, on Amazon EC2 M7a instances showed a 40% improvement in throughput, 50% reduction in latency, and 16% reduction in concurrent garbage collection (GC) pauses compared to existing instances."
Niall Mullen, Director Cloud Engineering, Netflix
“ACCIONA offers sustainable solutions to the most urgent challenges facing the planet, such as global warming, energy needs, and water shortages. We use Amazon EC2 M7a instances for computational heavy simulations of electricity grids and these instances allow us to simulate up to 64 different variables in a single simulation, vs. 16-30 variables before. Additionally, when we compared M7a instances to other instances, we saw a reduction in simulation time from 60-80 minutes to 18-22 minutes, which is, on average, a 59% improvement in multi-threading performance. And with M7a instances, we were able to see 64 threads progressing at the same speed, which we had not experienced before. We are excited for M7a instances to help accelerate our innovation.”
