The company moved its application environment to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help its customers meet digital transformation requirements for agility, time to market, and adaptability.
 
IBS runs its applications on AWS Graviton-based Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS instances. By adopting AWS Graviton, the company has improved application performance by 10 percent, reduced Amazon EC2 costs by 20 percent, and reduced Amazon RDS costs by 10 percent.

Opportunity | Accelerating Digital Transformation Across the Travel Industry

The travel industry was hit hard by the 2020 pandemic. Airlines experienced one billion fewer global arrivals in 2021, compared to pre-pandemic levels of nearly 1.5 billion in 2019. The industry also continues to deal with unpredictable travel volumes, increased competition, and evolving consumer expectations.

IBS was hosting its SaaS solutions in an on-premises environment, which lacked global reach and distribution, fully automated deployments, and the ability to optimize costs. To meet its customers’ evolving needs and swiftly roll out changes, IBS chose to re-architect its solutions on the AWS Cloud for increased agility, time to market, and scalability.

Solution | Gaining the Best Price Performance with AWS Graviton Processors

IBS leveraged AWS Global Infrastructure and a wide range of compute and storage solutions. It runs its mission-critical fleet and crew operations, aircraft maintenance, passenger services, loyalty program, staff travel, and air-cargo management applications on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances. IBS also uses Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) to manage its application databases.
 
To improve performance and optimize costs, IBS adopted Amazon EC2 instances powered by AWS Graviton T4g and C6g processors. AWS Graviton processors are designed by AWS to deliver the best price performance for cloud workloads running in Amazon EC2. With AWS Graviton, IBS improved application performance by 10 percent. The provider has also optimized its overall operating costs, driving a 20 percent reduction in Amazon EC2 run costs and a 9–10 percent reduction in Amazon RDS costs.
 
Additionally, IBS adopted a multi-architecture platform that includes Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) to run and scale containerized Kubernetes applications. “Using a multi-architecture platform on AWS provides more instances and processor variations for improved flexibility. We now have the option to leverage Graviton-based instances in all deployments,” says Abraham.
 
IBS developed its products to be compatible with multiple architectures capable of running on x86 and arm64 processors.  “Amazon EKS provides the flexibility to run x86 and arm64-based containers side by side in a single cluster. This accelerated our Graviton adoption journey, as we could gradually build our services as multi-architecture and release these services sprint on sprint,” says Jason Hiscock, vice president of IT Operations at IBS Software.
 
Migrating database instances to Graviton was straightforward for IBS, as it simply needed to change Amazon RDS instance types. Because application code is written in Java, the provider only required certification to validate the company’s service-level agreement (SLA) and non-functional requirements (NFR). Additionally, IBS’ monitoring and security tools were compatible with arm64.
 
 
Outcome | Building a Culture of Continuous Innovation and Sustainability

By using Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances, IBS is improving its application experience for customers, driving down operational costs, and supporting innovation. It can access more compute capacity at any time, which helps the company scale its applications to meet rising customer demand as the company grows.

“We want to build a culture of continuous innovation and adopt new technologies as the processor ecosystem is continuously evolving. This makes our products future ready and allows us to leverage the cost and performance benefits of the cloud,” says Hiscock.

The IBS team also noted that the adoption of energy efficient Graviton processors has led to a reduction in its carbon footprint. Considering usage of top three EC2 instance families (C4, R5, and C6g), between December 2021 and June 2022, IBS increased the relative usage of C6g from less than 1% to 19%, resulting in a decrease of the carbon emissions per instance hour of 40%. Abraham says, “The performance and cost benefits of using Graviton, combined with a reduction in our carbon footprint, is substantial. That’s another major driving factor in our Graviton adoption.”

With a strong foundation on AWS, IBS launched new ways to stay connected and helped its customers develop impactful capabilities during the pandemic and in a post-COVID-19 world. One example is how the provider has helped airlines use their loyalty programs to generate revenues from customers who have stopped flying. Furthermore, to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, IBS introduced features in its cargo management platform to facilitate contactless shipments, ensuring the safety of clients’ employees and customers.

Looking ahead, IBS plans to expand its implementation of AWS Graviton, with the new Amazon EC2 C7g instances to power future applications. Abraham says, “We’re trying to be disruptors in the industry. Working with AWS allows us to continuously transform and enhance our product lines for our customers.”
