Roche Builds Personalized Healthcare Virtualization Solutions on AWS

2021

Industry Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic placed an immediate strain on the healthcare system as hospitals faced ICU bed shortages and lockdowns forced patients with other ailments to delay care. Healthcare providers needed virtualization to maintain continuity of care and minimize the impact of COVID-19-related delays on patients with conditions such as COPD, coronary artery disease, and cancer.

Roche’s Solution

Roche, a multinational pharmaceutical and diagnostics company, sought to develop digital assets that would support virtual healthcare throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools, including AWS Identity & Access Management (IAM), Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Roche developed secure, cloud-based, and scalable solutions to enhance care virtualization. “Virtualization will make healthcare more accessible and patient-centric. It offers a chance to redesign care delivery and leverage cloud-based solutions,” says Okan Ekinci, MD, MBA, senior vice president of global marketing and innovation at Roche Information Solutions.

To maintain continuity of care for cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, Roche created NAVIFY Tumor Board, a cloud-based workflow product designed to securely integrate patient data for oncology care teams to determine optimal treatment plans without meeting in person. Roche also developed NAVIFY Symptom Tracker and Remote Monitor, cloud-based decision support solutions that providers use to track COVID-19 patients recovering at home and other at-risk individuals by integrating self-reported data with data obtained from wearable devices with patient consent.

Benefits of Using AWS

By building its NAVIFY solutions on AWS, Roche was able to ensure the security, computing capacity, application integration, and scalability of the suite of offerings. The NAVIFY solutions are a major step in increasing patients’ accessibility and engagement and ensuring continuity of care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
