You pay by the hour for this MySQL on Windows software, billed through your AWS account. The price depends only on the EC2 instance type you launch. You choose from about 50 instance sizes across several families. The t2, t3, and t3a families are general-purpose options that scale from nano and micro up through 2xlarge. The m2, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, m5n, and m5zn families offer larger compute and memory, ranging from large to 16xlarge. Larger instances cost more per hour. Your software rate applies on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The hourly rate covers a pre-configured MySQL database server on Windows. You get the database engine, connectors for several languages, and a database management workbench. The image also bundles a web server, a scripting runtime, and a web-based database admin tool, all set up for production use.
The hourly software rate meters only running time. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Keep in mind that AWS may still bill you for attached storage and other infrastructure while the instance is stopped. Restarting the instance resumes the software charge automatically.
Your bill combines two charges on the same AWS invoice. The software rate varies by the instance type you pick, and the AWS infrastructure charge applies on top. Both are metered per hour of running time. Picking a larger instance raises both the software and infrastructure portions.
