You pay by the hour for this hardened Ubuntu 18 image, based on the EC2 instance type you launch. Each dimension matches a specific instance type, so your cost scales with the compute, memory, storage, or accelerator capacity you choose. Smaller shared-core types like t2 and t3 sit at one end. Larger compute (c-family), memory (r-family and x-family), storage (i-family and d-family), and GPU or accelerator types (g, p, inf, trn) carry higher hourly rates. You run only what you need and stop charges when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the matching type, billed per hour. The rate covers the hardened Ubuntu 18 software layer on that instance. You pick the instance type that fits your compute, memory, storage, or accelerator needs, and that choice sets the hourly rate.
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. When you stop an instance, the per-hour software charge stops too. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the hardened image meters running time only.
The rate covers a pre-hardened, patched Ubuntu 18 image built to standard security benchmarks, so you skip manual hardening. You still pay separately for AWS compute, storage, and network usage. You configure your own applications and data on top of the image.
