You pay by the hour for the software running on an Amazon EC2 instance. There is no upfront commitment or fixed term. The many priced options are not separate plans or feature tiers. Instead, each one maps to a specific EC2 instance type, such as general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, or accelerated-computing families. Your hourly rate depends on the instance type you pick. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates than smaller sizes in the same family. Choose the instance that matches your workload's CPU, memory, and storage needs, and billing scales with your actual running hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and what is billed separately?
The hourly rate covers the software license for the pre-configured Docker on Ubuntu 24.04 image and its support. The underlying Amazon EC2 compute, storage, and data transfer are billed separately by AWS. Both charges appear together on your AWS bill for the instance type you run.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running hours. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate from the software license. You pay the software rate only while the instance runs.
If I switch to a different instance type, how does my rate change?
Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. If you launch a different type, you pay that type's rate for its running hours. There is no upgrade step or commitment. You can run different instance types at different times and are billed per type accordingly.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
