The t2 and t3/t3a families cover small to mid-size needs, from nano up through 2xlarge. The m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5dn, and m5ad families scale up to metal and 24xlarge sizes for larger compute demands. Larger instances carry more compute and memory, so their hourly rate rises accordingly. Each rate bundles the operating system with vendor support.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each rate covers one running EC2 instance of the chosen type. It includes the Minimal SUSE Enterprise Server 15 SP7 operating system plus vendor support. You connect over SSH using a key pair, logging in as ec2-user. The instance size sets its compute and memory capacity.
The software rate meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance stops accruing this hourly charge. Underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still bill separately. Charges resume once you restart the instance. You pay only for the hours each instance actually runs.
