Debian is a free operating system, developed by thousands of volunteers from all over the world who collaborate via the Internet. The Debian project's key strengths are its volunteer base, its dedication to the Debian Social Contract and Free Software, and its commitment to provide the best operating system possible. This new release is another important step in that direction.
Highlights
After 1 year, 9 months, and 28 days of development, the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 12 (code name "bookworm").
Based on a cloud optimized Linux 6.1 kernel with support for Enhanced Networking and Elastic Network Adaptor (ENA) networking. These AMIs include awscli version 2, cloud-init, and boto.
"bookworm" will be supported for the next 5 years thanks to the combined work of the Debian Security team and the Debian Long Term Support team.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
The Debian 12 (ARM) software is free, so you pay nothing for the operating system itself. Billing runs per hour and is tied to the ARM64 EC2 instance type you launch. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size within families like general purpose (t4g, m6g, m7g), compute (c6g, c7g, c7gn), memory (r6g, r7g, r8g, x2gd), storage (i4g, im4gn, is4gen), and graphics (g5g). Your cost scales with the size and family you choose, from small shared instances up to bare-metal and large multi-core options. Any charges reflect the underlying AWS compute you select.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit actually cover when I launch Debian 12 (ARM)?
Each hourly unit covers one running ARM64 EC2 instance of the size you pick. Billing follows the instance you launch, such as t4g.small or m7g.4xlarge. The Debian software itself is free, so the hourly figure reflects the underlying AWS compute for that instance size.
Am I charged for the software when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The Debian software is free, so no software charge applies whether the instance runs or sits idle. Hourly charges track the running AWS compute you use. A stopped instance stops accruing compute charges, though AWS storage fees for the attached EBS volume can still apply.
Are these images limited to certain AWS regions?
The Debian 12 ARM64 images run in all public AWS regions except those in China. China and US GovCloud availability is planned for the future. You access the images through AWS Marketplace or directly by AMI ID in each supported region.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
After launching your instance, connect to it using a Secure Shell (SSH) client with the SSH key you specified at launch. The default username is 'admin'.
Debian is developed and supported by a diverse global community. It can be reached through a variety of means including email, IRC, and web forums.
