This product has charges associated with it for the build, maintenance, and support of the Amazon Machine Image (AMI). DuckDB is an embeddable SQL OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) database management system designed for analytical querying. It's particularly optimized for analytical workloads on columnar data. DuckDB is written in C++ and aims to provide high-performance querying while maintaining a minimal footprint. DuckDB has no external dependencies, neither for compilation nor during run-time.
This is a repackaged open-source software product wherein additional charges apply for support and for providing it in a simple consumable AMI. DuckDB is an in-process analytical database that's designed to handle large datasets and complex queries efficiently. It's intended to be an alternative to data warehouses, providing high performance without the same level of complexity or cost. It stores data in a compressed columnar format, which provides the best performance for large-scale aggregations. This is in contrast to a transactional database, which is optimized for high-frequency writes and typically stores data as rows (tuples) to support that. DuckDB has no external dependencies, neither for compilation nor during run-time. DuckDB does not run as a separate process but is completely embedded within a host process.

DuckDB on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Powered by GlobalSolutions with 24/7 Support
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run. The software cost is the same across choices; what changes is the compute capacity behind it. The t3.nano and t3.small options are smaller burstable instances for light workloads. The m7a.medium, m6a.large, and m7i.large options give more consistent compute for heavier analytical queries. You pick the instance that fits your workload, and charges accrue for the hours you run it. All choices bundle the same pre-configured DuckDB image with 24/7 support.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the hourly instance choices actually provide for running DuckDB?
Each choice maps to an EC2 instance size. The t3.nano and t3.small are burstable instances for light or intermittent use. The m7a.medium, m6a.large, and m7i.large give steady compute for larger analytical queries. You pick one instance and pay for the hours it runs.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges accrue only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, software metering stops. Underlying AWS storage fees for the disk may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from the software charge.
Do the different instance choices include the same DuckDB software?
Yes. Every choice runs the same pre-packaged DuckDB image with all dependent components installed. The software version and 24/7 support are identical across instances. Only the compute capacity behind the software changes with the instance you select.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
