Overview
This is a repackaged open-source software product wherein additional charges apply for support and for providing it in a simple consumable AMI. DuckDB is an in-process analytical database that's designed to handle large datasets and complex queries efficiently. It's intended to be an alternative to data warehouses, providing high performance without the same level of complexity or cost. It stores data in a compressed columnar format, which provides the best performance for large-scale aggregations. This is in contrast to a transactional database, which is optimized for high-frequency writes and typically stores data as rows (tuples) to support that. DuckDB has no external dependencies, neither for compilation nor during run-time. DuckDB does not run as a separate process but is completely embedded within a host process.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. All eight dimensions deliver the same DuckDB image; they differ only by the underlying instance you select. The t3 options (nano, small, medium, large) are burstable general-purpose instances that scale from smaller to larger compute. The m7a, m7i, m6a, and m7a.medium options are general-purpose instances sized medium or large. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You pick the instance that matches your workload, and charges appear on your monthly AWS bill.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for each hour the chosen EC2 instance runs with the DuckDB image installed. The rate matches the instance type you select, from burstable t3 sizes to general-purpose m6a, m7a, and m7i options. The software comes pre-packaged, so you can query as soon as you connect via SSH.
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the software rate. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
The t3 sizes (nano, small, medium, large) are burstable, meaning they build credits during low use and spend them during spikes. The m6a, m7a, and m7i options provide steady general-purpose compute for continuous analytical queries. Pick the type that matches your workload; each carries its own hourly rate.
