This Ubuntu Pro subscription lets any EC2 Linux image attach an Ubuntu Pro license. It enables Pro services on Ubuntu machines and grants the license to run Pro containers on other Linux platforms.
The Ubuntu Pro subscription for EC2 Image Builder is a drag and drop component for attaching an Ubuntu Pro license to any Linux image. On Ubuntu machines, this license allows customers to build pipelines on top of the base Ubuntu Pro services, such as ESM and livepatch but also to run CIS and DISA-STIG hardening automated scripts using The Ubuntu Security Guide tool.
On other linux platforms, it attaches the Ubuntu Pro license allowing the host to run Pro containers on services such as EKS, ECS and others.

Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro on EC2 Image Builder, running on Arm-based Graviton instances. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, spanning general purpose (m-series), compute optimized (c-series), memory optimized (r- and x-series), storage optimized (i- and is-series), and graphics (g-series) families. Sizes run from nano and micro up to metal instances. Pricing scales with the instance's vCPU count, so larger sizes cost more per hour. Billing is usage-based and metered by the second, added to your existing AWS invoice with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate for each instance type actually pay for?
The rate pays for the Ubuntu Pro subscription running on that Arm-based EC2 instance. This includes security patches for open source applications, kernel Livepatch for updates without reboot, and FIPS and Common Criteria certified components. The charge is separate from the underlying EC2 compute cost.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The Ubuntu Pro charge meters running time by the second. A stopped instance is not running, so the software charge does not accrue. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance, but the Ubuntu Pro subscription meters active usage only.
Why does the hourly price differ so much between instance types?
Pricing scales with each instance's vCPU count. Larger instances have more vCPUs, so they cost more per hour. A nano or micro size carries a lower rate than a metal or 48xlarge size. Choose the instance type that fits your workload to control cost.
