Overview
The Ubuntu Pro subscription for EC2 Image Builder is a drag and drop component for attaching an Ubuntu Pro license to any Linux image. On Ubuntu machines, this license allows customers to build pipelines on top of the base Ubuntu Pro services, such as ESM and livepatch but also to run CIS and DISA-STIG hardening automated scripts using The Ubuntu Security Guide tool.
On other linux platforms, it attaches the Ubuntu Pro license allowing the host to run Pro containers on services such as EKS, ECS and others.
Ubuntu Pro is a comprehensive subscription for security, support, and compliance, optimized for AWS with 10 years of security maintenance, and providing an option to extend for 5 additional years through the Legacy add-on. With Ubuntu Pro, you can enjoy enhanced security coverage that protects the OS and expands security maintenance to thousands of packages, including critical applications such as Apache Kafka, NGINX, MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and more.

The price scales with instance size because Ubuntu Pro is billed on the instance's vCPU count and metered by the second. Larger instances with more vCPUs carry a higher hourly rate. You select the dimension that matches the instance type you deploy. This charge covers the Ubuntu Pro software and runs alongside your underlying EC2 compute cost.

One hour covers the Ubuntu Pro software running on a single EC2 instance of the matching type. Metering is based on the instance's vCPU count and measured by the second. The dimension name is the EC2 instance type, so you pick the one matching the instance you launch.
The software charge meters running time only, metered by the second. A stopped instance does not run, so Ubuntu Pro charges stop accruing. You may still pay underlying AWS storage costs for the stopped instance, but those are separate from this software subscription.
The price covers Ubuntu Pro security maintenance, kernel Livepatch, and patches for hundreds of open source applications. It also includes FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria EAL2 certified components, with optional hardening profiles. Coverage runs for up to 15 years with the legacy add-on.
