Directus: The Collaborative Backend for Applications and AI

Most backends are a black box. Developers build and maintain them. Everyone else files tickets and waits. Directus changes that.

Connect any SQL database and Directus instantly wraps it with production-ready REST and GraphQL APIs, a native MCP server for AI agents and tools, and a visual Studio your whole team can work in directly. Developers stay in control. Content teams, PMs, and business users stop waiting on engineering. AI agents operate on your live data with the same access policies as your human users.

What you get out of the box:

    • Instant REST and GraphQL APIs from any SQL database (Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, MS SQL, SQLite, and more)

    • Native MCP server so any AI tool or agent can connect directly to your data

    • Visual Studio for non-technical teams to manage content, run workflows, and build dashboards

    • Role-based access control down to the field level

    • Built-in automation engine for workflow orchestration

    • Asset management with on-the-fly image transformations

    • Extensible with custom endpoints, hooks, interfaces, and modules

Your data, your infrastructure, your rules. Directus runs on your AWS environment. You bring the database, you own the data, and nothing moves to a third-party platform. Governance is built in, not bolted on.

45 million downloads. 35,000+ GitHub stars. Trusted by teams at Tripadvisor, Weber, Copa Airlines, and thousands more.

Directus Brings Flexible, Scalable Modeling for Complex Business Logic

    Reviewed on Feb 20, 2026
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
What I like most about Directus is the flexibility it offers to model complex and diverse business logic in a structured and scalable way.
What do you dislike about the product?
Expanding the available layout options for data input would improve usability and make content management more comfortable for editors.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Directus solves the problem of rigid and backend-heavy content management. It gives us the flexibility to model our business logic exactly as needed without building large parts of the backend ourselves. This significantly reduces development effort and allows us to focus more on frontend development and user experience. At the same time, it provides a much better and more intuitive editorial experience compared to our previous system, which will definitely increase efficiency for our content team.

Directus: A Scalable, Flexible, and Reliable CMS/BaaS for Projects of Any Size

    Reviewed on Sep 03, 2025
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
I have found Directus to be an outstanding platform that is scalable, flexible, and reliable. I first used it successfully for a startup multi-tenant SaaS product, and therefore had no hesitation in recommending its implementation at ColX Group, leveraging it as the primary CMS that powers our 4 brands websites.
What do you dislike about the product?
Directus is generally easy to use, though the JSON output can be a little difficult to work with at times, especially for complex relationships. Once understood and configured properly, however, it remains a very reliable and flexible solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Directus serves as the primary CMS powering all four of our group brand websites

    Enterprise-ready headless CMS

    Reviewed on Aug 08, 2025
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
Directus has significantly sped up our team's development, particularly thanks to its built-in CRUD endpoints, authentication, storage, and a robust row-level and field-level permission system. We thoroughly enjoy Flows, which have proven incredibly powerful and reliable when building complex integrations. Additionally, we appreciate the ability to create custom endpoints, which have expanded the standard Directus and enabled seamless interaction with external systems. Given the size of our database, comprising over 400 tables, working with Directus has been a tremendous asset in efficiently managing and interacting with our data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Directus is continuously evolving based on the contributions of its community. This is a positive aspect, but it can also be problematic when dealing with a large codebase like ours. Often, introducing new features leads to breaking changes, requiring significant refactoring to maintain compatibility with the latest version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Directus has helped us significantly increase our speed by providing fast and easy access to data in our large database. Its out-of-the-box features allowed us to quickly develop the frontend without needing to focus on backend complexities for a while, enabling our team to move faster and be more productive.
