See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. Pricing is not tiered by feature set. Instead, you pick a compute instance that fits your workload, and the hourly rate scales with that instance's size and family. Smaller instances like t2.nano cost less per hour than large ones like x1e.32xlarge or metal instances. Every option runs the same Magento Open Source software on Ubuntu 22.04, which comes pre-installed with a web server, database, PHP modules, and search. Your total cost depends on the instance you choose and how many hours you run it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get when I pick an instance like t3.medium or x1e.32xlarge?
Each option maps to one AWS EC2 virtual machine of that size and family. The instance name sets its CPU, memory, and network specs. All instances run the same pre-installed software: a web server, database, PHP modules, and search engine on Ubuntu 22.04.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Underlying AWS storage costs for the attached disk may still apply while the instance sits stopped. You pay the software rate only for running hours.
Does a larger instance change what the software can do, or just performance?
Pricing is not tiered by feature. Every instance runs the identical Magento Open Source software with the same components. Choosing a larger instance gives more CPU, memory, and network capacity for heavier traffic. It does not unlock extra features. Your cost rises with instance size and running hours only.
