KrakenD is a simple-to-use Enterprise-grade API Gateway built to accelerate your microservices adoption, provide better response times, and reduce the bandwidth consumed. KrakenD aggregates, filters, and manipulates data (Backend for Frontend) from multiple and heterogeneous APIs and non-API services. It provides a single API to your products (web, mobile apps, devices, services) with only the needed data.
KrakenD scales linearly without any problem thanks to its stateless design. It also secures, throttles, caches, and monitors your underlying services. Some of the features are rate-limiting, authorization, load-balancing, proxy, monitoring, tracing, multi-protocol, automatic decoding, and many other features.

You pay by the hour for a ready-to-run virtual machine with the software pre-installed. The single pricing structure is the hourly software rate, which changes based on the EC2 instance type you choose. Instance types span the t2, t3, m3, m4, m5, c3, c4, and c5 families, ranging from small sizes like nano and micro up to larger sizes like 18xlarge. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute and memory. You add standard AWS infrastructure charges on top. There is no upfront commitment, and you can stop billing by stopping the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
KrakenD Community Edition is open source under the Apache 2.0 license, so the software itself carries no license cost. You pay for the pre-configured virtual machine by the hour, plus the underlying AWS infrastructure charges for the EC2 instance you run.
The hourly rate meters running time on the EC2 instance. When you stop the instance, software billing stops. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the hourly software rate applies only while the instance runs.
Instance type changes the compute and memory you get, not the feature set. KrakenD runs on minimal resources and stays stateless with no database. Larger instances handle higher throughput and burst traffic, since your hardware sets the limits on endpoints and parallel queries.

Usage
Choose the server size according to your planned usage: https://www.krakend.io/docs/deploying/server-dimensioning/ KrakenD will start on port 8080 with an empty configuration.
You can check if the server is listening in http://yourinstance.compute-1.amazonaws.com:8080/__health
- To apply your own API rules inject your configuration in /etc/krakend/krakend.json.
- The configuration file can be generated manually or using https://designer.krakend.io

Manual setup example:
- SSH your machine: ssh ec2-user@your-public-amazon-dns -i yourkey.pem
- Go to https://designer.krakend.io and visually generate your endpoints
- Save the generated krakend.json file and copy it to /etc/krakend/krakend.json (needs sudo)
- Restart the krakend service with: sudo systemctl restart krakend

What do you like best about the product?
KrakenD is our technical BFF – Backend-for-Frontend (also best friend forever) simply by declaring the backend sources and allowing frontend teams to define the exact information they want to retrieve. It is an outstanding secured, ultra-performant, stateless API gateway which scales effortlessly whether you are running microservices or more complex architectures. Highly recommended!

A user interface would be a nice to have, but anyone with technical skills could easily manage it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps us us transform different format on the fly and not to mention that it is secured.

What do you like best about the product?
Single point for APIs. Licencing model. Flexibility, simplicity and specially the Krakend's support team.
What do you dislike about the product?
Direct integration with RabbitMQ was a bit disappointing although it may suffice for simple scenarios, it was not robust enough for our use cases. This is something that they could improve.
