See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. The many options here are not tiers or add-ons. Each one maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and GPU resources you select. Smaller instances like t2.nano or t3.micro suit light use. Larger instances such as g5.48xlarge, x1e.32xlarge, or metal instances handle heavier workloads. You run the same Ubuntu 22.04 desktop environment regardless of choice. Pick the instance that fits your performance needs, and your hourly cost follows that selection.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly charge cover, and what is billed separately?
The hourly rate covers the Ubuntu 22.04 desktop software running on your chosen instance. It includes the pre-installed open source tools like the office suite, text editor, image editor, and browsers. Amazon EC2 compute, storage, and data transfer are billed separately by AWS based on the instance type you select.
Am I charged when I stop or pause my instance?
Software charges meter running time only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. You may still pay AWS storage fees for the attached disk while the instance is stopped. Restarting the instance resumes the hourly software charge automatically.
If I need more performance, how do I move to a bigger instance type?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. To scale up, you stop the instance, change its type to a more powerful option, and restart. Your hourly cost then follows the new selection. The same desktop environment runs regardless of the instance you pick.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance.
