You pay by the hour for this CentOS image, with the rate set by the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to one instance size within a family, such as general purpose (m and t series), compute optimized (c series), memory optimized (r and x series), storage optimized (d and i series), and accelerated computing (g, p, and inf series). Hourly software cost scales with the size and capability of the instance you choose. Larger instances within a family carry a higher hourly rate. You pay only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I paying for on top of the standard EC2 instance charge?
You pay an hourly software fee for the packaged CentOS 7 (CentOS Stream 7) image, billed per instance-hour. This sits on top of the underlying AWS EC2 compute charge, which AWS bills separately. Your rate depends on the EC2 instance type you launch, since each dimension maps to one instance size.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage, such as attached volumes, while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
What does one billing unit represent for this image?
One unit is one hour that a single EC2 instance runs this CentOS image. Each dimension ties to a specific instance type, such as t3.medium or m5.large. If you run several instances, each one meters its own hours separately, and the invoice sums them.
