General-purpose M-family sizes (M3, M4, M5, M5a, M5ad, M5d, M5dn, M5n) scale up through large to 24xlarge and bare-metal builds. Larger instances add CPU, memory, and networking capacity. You run only what you need and stop billing by stopping the instance.

Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance halts these hourly charges. You may still incur separate AWS storage fees for the stopped instance's disk, but the VPN listing meters running time only.
T-family sizes (nano through xlarge) are burstable and suit lighter or variable VPN traffic. M-family sizes (M3 through M5n, up to 24xlarge and bare-metal) hold steady CPU, memory, and networking for continuous or heavier loads. Your hourly rate rises as you move to sizes with more capacity.
