Umami is an open source, privacy-focused web analytics platform that shows how visitors find and use your website, without cookies and without collecting personal data. This preconfigured Umami AMI is built for developers, startups, agencies, publishers, and businesses that want simple, accurate website analytics they fully own. It launches on AWS in minutes, so you can skip manual installation and keep all visitor data on your own infrastructure.
Instant Deployment: Launch a fully configured Umami server in minutes using a ready-to-use AMI and CloudFormation template, with PostgreSQL, an Nginx reverse proxy, and Let's Encrypt SSL set up for you. Each instance generates its own database password and application secrets on first boot, and the admin password is set from the value you choose at launch.
Cookie-Free, Privacy-First Tracking: Umami does not use cookies or collect personal data. Visitor data is anonymized and stored only on your own instance, which helps you meet GDPR and CCPA requirements.
Lightweight Tracking Script: Add one small script tag to the head of your website to start collecting data. The script loads quickly and has minimal impact on page speed.
Real-Time Dashboard: See live visitors, page views, bounce rate, visit duration, referrers, browsers, operating systems, devices, and countries in a clean, easy-to-read dashboard.
Custom Events and Reports: Track button clicks, sign-ups, downloads, and other custom events, then analyze them with funnel, retention, user journey, UTM, goal, and attribution reports.
Unlimited Websites and Teams: Track as many websites as you need from one instance, invite team members, and share read-only dashboards through public share links.
API Access: Query your analytics data through the Umami REST API to build custom reports or connect Umami to other tools.
Database Backups to S3: A backup script dumps the Umami PostgreSQL database and uploads it to your S3 bucket. Run it on demand or schedule it with cron.
Version: 3.4.0
Operating System: Ubuntu 26.04

Umami - Privacy-Focused Google Analytics Alternative for Web Analytics
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this software on. Billing is usage-based, so costs depend on how long each instance stays running. The dimensions span several instance families: t2 and t3/t3a burstable types, m-series general purpose types, c-series compute types, and r-series memory types. Within each family, you choose a size from small through xlarge. Larger sizes give the database more memory for busier sites. The guide suggests t3a.small as a baseline for small to medium traffic. The software license itself carries no separate per-site or per-user fee.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Does the hourly charge still apply when I stop the instance to pause tracking?
No. While the instance is stopped, the software stops running and tracking pauses, so no visits record. You can restart it later as needed. Note that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for the EBS volume, even though the software meters running time only.
What do I actually get for each hourly instance type, and which size should I pick?
Each dimension maps to one running EC2 instance of that type and size. You pay per hour it runs. The guide suggests t3a.small as a baseline for small to medium sites. For several busy websites, choose a larger size so the database gets more memory.
Are there separate fees per website or per dashboard user on top of the hourly rate?
No. The hourly instance charge is the only software fee. You can add multiple websites and create separate dashboard users from the settings area without extra per-site or per-user costs. You also supply your own S3 bucket for backups, which carries standard AWS storage charges.

Umami Deployment with Privacy-Focused Web Analytics Platform
This deployment launches Umami on a single EC2 instance using a CloudFormation template. The stack creates a VPC with a public subnet, the instance with an Elastic IP, a security group, and an IAM role that allows Route53 DNS validation for Let's Encrypt SSL and database backups to your S3 bucket. On the instance, the Umami 3.4.0 container and PostgreSQL 17 run with Docker Compose. The Umami application serves the dashboard, the tracking script, and the API, and PostgreSQL stores websites, users, sessions, and events. Each instance generates its own database password and application secrets on first boot, and the admin password is set from the AdminPassword parameter. The application is available over HTTP on the Elastic IP straight away, and Nginx serves HTTPS on your domain once the certificate is issued. A backup script dumps the database and uploads it to S3, and it can be scheduled with cron. After the stack completes, open the URL shown in the stack Outputs, sign in as admin with the password you set, then add a website in Settings and copy the tracking code into the head of your site. This architecture provides private, secure website analytics with simple management and backup workflows.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

Access the application via a browser at http://<your domain name> or http://<Public IPv4 address>.
Product will try to create SSL certificate when its deploying, if domain hosted on route53. If the automatic SSL creation unsuccessful then you have to point domain name into server ip, ssh into server and run /root/certificate_generate_standalone.sh. Admin email using for SSL generation.
