You pay by the hour for Varnish Pro, with billing tied to the AWS EC2 instance type you run. The 14 dimensions map to two instance families: t3 and t3a. Within each family, sizes range from nano up to 2xlarge. Larger instance sizes carry more compute and memory, so the hourly rate rises as you move up in size. This pay-as-you-go model charges only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront license purchase. You choose the instance size that fits your workload and add standard AWS infrastructure charges separately.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to for billing purposes?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the chosen type, billed per hour. A t3.large instance running one hour equals one hour of charges at that size's rate. Instance size determines compute and memory, which sets the hourly rate you pay.
Am I charged for the software when an instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue software fees. You may still see separate AWS charges for attached storage or reserved resources, but the software license meters running hours only.
How does this pay-as-you-go model work, and do I commit to a license upfront?
You pay for Varnish Enterprise on an hourly basis with no upfront license purchase. Charges accrue only for the hours each instance runs. You scale by launching or stopping instances or by moving to a size with more compute, and your bill adjusts accordingly.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
In your image, you will see two "varnishd" processes running one is the master process and the other is a child process. Varnish Pro listens by default on TCP port 80 where it expects to receive HTTP requests.
The easiest way to administer the varnish node is to use the Varnish Controller which provides a single point of control for all Varnish server administration. To add a varnish node to the Varnish Controller "varnish-controller-agent" needs to be configured. The "varnish-agent" is used by the Varnish Custom Statistics (VCS) which enables real-time statistics allowing you to aggregate, display and analyze user traffic.
