You pay by the hour for running this analytics database on Amazon Linux. Pricing is tied to the AWS EC2 instance type you choose, and each instance type is a separate billing dimension. The options span compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and general-purpose families, along with bare-metal choices. Larger instances within a family carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU, memory, or storage. There are no tiers or add-ons to combine. You simply select the instance size that fits your workload, and billing scales with the hours you run it.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
The hourly rate covers the software license for the analytics database running on the chosen EC2 instance type. Charges accrue only while the instance runs. Fully stopped instances do not incur software charges. Underlying AWS resources like storage may still bill separately when instances are stopped.
How does the instance family I pick affect my hourly cost?
Each EC2 instance type is a separate billing dimension with its own hourly rate. Compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, general-purpose, and bare-metal families are available. Larger sizes within a family cost more per hour because they provide more CPU, memory, or storage. You match the instance to your workload profile.
If I run a multi-node cluster, how does billing add up?
You are billed per running instance per hour. A cluster with multiple nodes accrues the hourly rate for each node you run. Total cost equals the per-instance rate multiplied by node count and hours run. During setup, you specify your number of nodes and the Amazon Linux deployment.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
