Cloud streaming workflows have reduced costs and simplify remote video contribution
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for Haivision SRT Gateway is primarily for sending links from remote sites back to my production control center.
A quick specific example of how I use Haivision SRT Gateway for sending links from remote sites is that because I use the hosted SRT Gateway, I don't have to worry about network configurations for port forwarding or having a public IP address, and I can call into the cloud-based SRT Gateway from a remote location and then pull that content down on my system back in the control room.
What is most valuable?
Haivision SRT Gateway has positively impacted my organization because being able to spin up a cloud-based server whenever I need the service is really cost-effective since the license is applied as part of the subscription cost, allowing me to only pay for it when I need it, meaning I'm not stuck with a large expenditure that only gets used for certain days or months of the year, making it really beneficial from a budget point of view.
By being able to spin up an instance of Haivision SRT Gateway when required, it provides predictable costs based on the cost per hour of running the service, enabling me to work out rough costs for what running SRT Gateway might cost if I know I have a specific event in mind.
The best feature Haivision SRT Gateway offers for me is firewall traversal, as when I'm working at a corporate site or somewhere outside of my infrastructure, I don't always have direct control of the organization's network or the ability to get ports forwarded or have a public IP address, and by using caller mode within SRT Gateway, it traverses any firewall issues and calls out to an external IP address, which is really positive for me, along with the stream replication feature that allows me to distribute that feed to multiple destinations within a production.
The stream replication feature of Haivision SRT Gateway has allowed me to send multiple feeds to multiple locations, which is beneficial for people either viewing or working remotely on something.
What needs improvement?
There isn't anything to improve specifically at the moment regarding Haivision SRT Gateway since Haivision has recently updated the user interface, which makes it much more intuitive and user-friendly to work with now, so I have no complaints from my side.
I don't think there's anything, even something small, that could make my experience with Haivision SRT Gateway even better as I'm really happy with Haivision as a company and I use their other products.
The reason I chose a rating of 9 out of 10 for Haivision SRT Gateway is that the service is fantastic and has everything that I would need, being really intuitive, but I didn't give it a 10 because there's always room for improvement in the future.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Haivision SRT Gateway for a couple of years since 2024.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I've never had a problem with the accuracy and reliability of the output from Haivision SRT Gateway, as video streams are always rock solid with no dropped packets or any degradation or artifacts, so I am really pleased and happy.
Haivision SRT Gateway is stable as I've never had a problem with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of Haivision SRT Gateway is such that based on the number of SRT feeds required, I can choose an instance with the relevant number of processors, RAM, and storage, allowing me to scale up an instance based on the job requirement and how many feeds I need to input and output.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't really needed to contact customer support for Haivision SRT Gateway, but based on other Haivision products when I've contacted support, I've usually received a response in less than 24 hours.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I haven't used a previous solution before Haivision SRT Gateway.
How was the initial setup?
I purchased Haivision SRT Gateway through the AWS Marketplace .
What was our ROI?
I don't have any specific costs to share regarding return on investment with Haivision SRT Gateway, but because it's a subscription-based model that I spin up as and when required, it means I don't have to have a full expenditure to buy the system in full and host it on my premises, allowing me to subscribe to the service as needed and build those costs into a production budget at the outset, which is really positive.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing has been that the marketplace makes working out costs really simple, as costs are based on per region and also the size of the server required to run SRT Gateway, where it suggests the optimum instance and server size to spin up, giving a cost per hour, so costs are predictable, and I only use the server when I need it for a production.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Haivision SRT Gateway, I was aware of other options in the marketplace, such as Elemental offered by AWS and Kalabacloud, but since I had already used Haivision products, including StreamHub from Haivision, it just seemed that a positive choice was obvious.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for others looking into using Haivision SRT Gateway is to definitely recommend subscribing on AWS or a similar cloud-based platform, spinning up an instance for a couple of hours to give it a thorough test before using it on a live production, as everything is really intuitive, firewall rules can be set within AWS when starting the instance, and it has been really positive for me, so I'd recommend giving it a try. I gave this product a rating of 9 out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Reduced live production latency and costs while improving uptime and remote monitoring
What is our primary use case?
Haivision SRT Gateway is used for our live production and contribution backhaul, which helps us to secure the ingest SRT from the field cameras. It also helps us for cloud replication, which reduces the source bandwidth by using AWS as the hub to fan out the streams to multiple broadcast destinations for our organization.
The remote monitoring and multi-viewing SRT features give us a listener proxy for diagnostic purposes and enable multi-viewers for our remote production environments.
Our live production contribution involves sending field footage to control rooms and studios while also returning studio talkback and graphics, which gives us visibility and good low latency.
Haivision SRT Gateway covers multipath redundancy and recovers packets up to 30 to 50 percent. Bandwidth efficiency is significantly lower than UDP and RDP due to the ARQ and FEC.
The secure platform includes AES-256 encryption, so no VPNs or tunnels are needed.
Haivision SRT Gateway provides multi-protocol conversions including SRT to RTP, RTP to FEC, RTMP, RTSP, HLC, TS, and UDP, which provides us with good real-time statistics and firewall traversal.
Path redundancy features simultaneous multipath SRT streaming over primary backup networks for a maximum uptime of 99 percent.
Encryption with AES is also available to ensure the content and all data is secured by 128 or 256-bit end-to-end encryption with a key management service.
How has it helped my organization?
After implementing Haivision SRT Gateway, the monthly cost we were paying to other solutions has been reduced significantly by 88 percent through adopting the AWS pay-as-you-go model.
Latency has been improved substantially. Before using the solution, it was around five to 10 seconds, which was a major drawback for the organization. After implementing the service, we have achieved latency in the range of 100 to 500 milliseconds, which represents a 95 percent improvement.
Uptime has been improved by 70 percent and bandwidth has been improved by 38 percent.
