This image includes the FIPS 140-3 kernel and cryptographic modules out of the box, along with all the features of Ubuntu Pro, such as expanded security patches for over 25,000 packages available in the Ubuntu Universe repository. Additionally, this AMI includes security updates for all the packages, including FIPS-certified modules.
Ubuntu Pro FIPS also incorporates Canonical's Ubuntu USG (Ubuntu Security Guide) tooling for guided compliance, with hardening profiles from CIS (Center for Internet Security) and DISA STIG (Defense Information Systems Agency Security Technical Implementation Guides).
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. The rate depends only on the EC2 instance type you launch. Hundreds of instance types are covered, spanning general purpose, compute, memory, storage, and GPU or accelerator families in sizes from nano and micro up to metal. Larger instances with more vCPUs and memory carry higher hourly rates, so your cost scales with the compute you select. All types include the same FIPS-certified Ubuntu Pro security and compliance support; you choose the instance, and billing follows your usage.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover beyond running Ubuntu on my instance?
The rate covers FIPS-certified cryptographic modules plus Ubuntu Pro security maintenance, hardening tools, and vulnerability patching. You get access to a trusted open source repository and compliance profiles for standards like FIPS 140, CIS, and DISA-STIG on the running instance.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running instance-hours. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. Underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
Does using more instances or a mix of types change how I am billed?
Each running instance is billed separately at the hourly rate for its own type. Running several instances adds their individual hourly charges together. Charges accrue independently per instance, so a mix of small and large types bills each at its own rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
